I am getting off well at this Garden Blogger’s Bloom Day with Grape Hyacinths.  As you may know, you plant these bulbs in the fall, and that is how I started. However, I enjoyed seeing the hyacinths come up in the spring, and was not surprised that  the flowers and greenery died in mid-summer. But THEN – the greenery comes up late in the summer and lives green  through the winter, into the spring, and into Bloom Time. I was surprised, but am happy with this system. (more…)

Flowers are slowly blooming in our garden. This plant, Pulmonaria, had lots of leaves showing off, but overnight it bloomed and surprised me A happy surprise.  This plant prefers moist soil that is rich.  It might have bloomed today because we watered it last night. After the flowers bloom old leaves can be cut off and will be stimulated to create a fresh crop that will  be attractive all season. One important fact, it prefers shady locations, but my plants will get sun part of the day. (more…)

I devoted my last Saturday’s great event of The Western Mass Master Gardener Association’s Spring Gardening Symposium . As I walked in I immediately saw the used book table ready to be given away to  those who will be using them. I left several books myself – and then took  three books for myself. (more…)

This early morning I walked downstairs to make myself a cup of coffee. I was surprised to see that the curtain on the front door seemed pink. I opened the door and and before my eyes I saw a rosy sky. (more…)

A lot of snow was dumped on our town a few days ago which did not make me happy.  However, The weather got warmer. And warmer. Today, this afternoon, the snow melted enough that the first crocuses bloomed. (more…)

When we went to bed we knew there would be snow in the morning, but when I went into the kitchen to make my early morning coffee I did not expect this kind of beauty.  It was still snowing lightly but the trees and shrubs were heavy with the wet snow.  (more…)

Marigolds are one of the standbys in my garden. They are so bright and long blooming. And now I know that marigolds are useful for weak eyes! There are many mysteries in the garden.

Wood sorrel is surely the Herb for the heart –

There was a time when I never imagined that flowers grew in the winter. But now I love visiting golden witch hazel (mostly) flowers in early February. There are about 12 types of witch hazels, but even so, there are more types of color in these shrubs.  I am not sure of the name of this shaggy yellow blossom, but I think it is Hamamelis virginiana.
