When we moved into Greenfield 10 years ago, I started creating a garden in back of our house. There was nothing besides a skating rank for children, but my planted trees and flowers came slowly. By 8 years the garden was full. Then I started thinking about what to do. This week I decided I had to rip down the Raspberries – which had not been producing. I immediately began to cut down all the berries.
I pulled out everything with all of the leaves, but there was more to do. Henry did a big job getting rid of the metal posts that were used to help hold up the raspberries. Of course, there were no berries. .
And so, before dinner time I had almost put in a sufficient amount of good soil. After supper I finished spreading more of the good soil. And now, all I have to do to decide about which flowers I will choose. Needless to say it will take time to fill this bed, but I am eager to begin.
What a lot of work, Pat and Henry! I know what it is to remove raspberries, and it’s not easy! I can’t wait to see what you plant in this new garden!
Susan – It was a small space, and we never got many berries – and now we are looking at the naked spot – with extra good soil. Now we have to decide what to put there. I hope you stop by sometime if you are in Greenfield, 36 Beech Street!
Wow, you’ve been busy! It’s always interesting–mixed feelings–to rip out plants that aren’t performing and move to new options. Once the decision’s made and the work is done, it’s hopeful and fun to move on to new plans. Good luck!
