We’re in Texas

Two Texans and me

I got to Houston just in time for the Garden Conservancy‘s Open Garden Days.  My daughter Kate (R),  Melissa the Houston Garden Girl (center) and I set off to see many beautiful gardens surrounding beautiful houses in some of the historic neighborhoods in the city. I can’t show you all 500 photos I took, but I want to give you just a taste of what we saw.  More will show up over time.

It is azalea season in Houston and there are magnificent azalea hedges and other sorts of azalea plantings everywhere!

But you know what kind of flower is my favorite.  Roses!

Golden climber

This beautiful rose which I cannot identify was in the most magnificent garden we saw. On the other side of the wall was one of the things I most admired.

Hornbeam bosque

The owner of the garden told us that this space is patterned after a garden in Paris.  Note the meticulously clipped hedges (which abound in this garden), another French element. The monkey grass greenery is separated by paths of stone dust. The day was very warm and it is easy to see how treasured shade is in Houston. Or anywhere.

What a perfect break from the New England cold! Gardens and family and azaleas – interesting how many Texans love that clipped French look 🙂

Oh my gosh Pat you will come home with the worst case of gardenitis. What a good way to start the gardening season by seeing all of those gardens. Of course seeing family is even better.

  3. Pam/Digging

Oh, how fun to see pictures from the Houston tour. Yes, shade IS treasured here in Texas. It must seem a very early spring to you, Pat!

Cyndy – This has been a perfect trip – with the weather cooperating in every way. More photos to come.
Lisa – Serious gardenitis! I can hardly wait to get my hands in the dirt.
Pam – I think I will be able to plant lettuce and spinach in my new Front Bed when I get home. I hope!

Pat, the hornbeam bosque is stunning! No wonder you were impressed!

I’m so glad you and Henry were able to visit my corner of Katy. Thanks for taking the time to do so!
