Hi Pat, thanks so much for the in depth narrative about this poem and the feelings tied up with it. I cannot imagine the poetry hour, but so admire the idea of it.

Frances
http://fairegarden.wordpress.com/

One of the best poems ever. That verb, unleaving, sums up this time of year. And your photo does, too!

Pat this is wonderful. You can go on and on if you like. I wouldn't have known any of this if you hadn't. I like the poems too.

I can just see some boys reciting poems. Ha.. I bet they all ended up being great speakers.

I love the idea of Culture hour. That is SO awesome to have boys recite and learn and memorize a poem per week. What a great education those boys must've had.

Thank you for sharing all this, Pat! I saw your comment on Lisa's post and thought I would pop over. Don't apologize for your commentary--it makes the poem much more meaningful. I agree that teenagers can't fully comprehend Hopkins' poem. "The Highwayman" was a poem I learned in junior high, and I remember loving it at the time for its tragic story. I can still recite some of the lines today--proof that learning to memorize a poem is not an antiquated method of teaching:)

"The Last Duchess" was a favorite poem of mine to teach--so many layers there. And I remember reading Jean Kerr years ago, too.

I chose a poem for my Muse Day post I'd never heard of before, a very simple one, just because I wanted to focus on the photos I had instead. But I've really connected with the poems you've included here--thanks for bringing back many memories.
