Snow and the Wind Doth Blow
And this is the view from my reading chair. Note the chicken waterer defrosting by the fire. No Sunday papers in this storm, so I am reading The Earth Moved: On the Remarkable Achievements of Earthworms by Amy Stewart, one of the witty and knowledgeable members of the Garden Rant blog http://www.gardenrant.com/.
The Earth Moved is an inspiring book full of weird and wonderful facts about worms, and Darwin and our soil. And we gardeners know it is all about the soil. Amy has her own worm composter and uses the worm castings (worm manure) as fertilizer in the garden . She has also found that in addition to enriching the soil, there is something in the castings that seems to deter pests like whitefly.
Amy gives a bibliography of helpful books like Mary Appelhof’s Worms Eat My Garbage and websites like http://www.wormdigest.org/. I am going to start my own researches and getting a worm farm going is one of my New Year’s resolutions!
